Day 9: Simple Improvement
Over on Budgeting for Lazy People
The secret to setting up a budget you'll actually follow
If nothing else, remember this one simple budgeting rule: Spend less money than you make.
That simple rule translates into every arena of life.
Financial
The reason you're in debt is because you have spent more money than you were bringing in. Mitigating circumstances notwithstanding that is the answer for how you got there. The solution is pretty simple. Either increase your income to outpace your spending, or slash your spending to below your income levels or do both and double your pleasure.
Physical
Whether you like it or not this is going to sound harsh: if you have a weight problem it is ultimately because you take in more calories than you burn. The solution sounds pretty simple then doesn't it? Eat less, burn more. Increase your activity and cut back on the calories.
Spin your physical budget up on it's head. I qualify here just like anyone else. God has blessed me with a fast metabolism but greed over the holidays wreaks just as much havoc on my body as anyone else.
Spiritual
The same rule applies here: you'll never be more spiritual than the time that you spend developing your faith. It's a simple rule and a simple formula.
When Jesus was praying in the garden of Gethsemane his disciples were sleeping. Twice he woke them up and warned them - pray so that you don't enter into temptation. But they promptly went back to sleep.
Unless I'm quite mistaken, they were tired yes, but Jesus clearly implies that if they would just get up and put forth the effort of praying the dividends it would pay would keep them from temptation in the coming hours. They didn't put it in the bank, so when the time came they had nothing to withdraw.
Don't live beyond your means.
